The Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment program was launched in Colorado last fall. The MOST provides a process for translating patient treatment preferences into a medical order set, which is honored in any healthcare setting. Through the efforts of dedicated volunteer trainers, the word about MOST is getting out -- but many healthcare providers are still unfamiliar with the process. At the same time, trainers and early adopters have encountered new questions and complexities as they have prepared their communities for implementation.

Providers of all types and from all settings are invited: EMS, hospitals, long-term care, hospice and palliative care, primary care, home health, nonmedical caregiving, and senior advisors and services.

This two-part workshop, sponsored by Life Quality Institute, will provide a thorough introduction to the MOST process and form in the morning, and, in the afternoon, a refresher and more advanced, case-based consideration of MOST implementation realities. The afternoon session will also provide guidance in how to initiate and carry through a productive conversation with a patient to complete the form.

Over lunch, those interested in offering education to their facilities or communities will be provided with a basic training and tools for presentations.

  • Morning Session, Introduction to MOST, 9:30AM to 11:30AM, $45 ($35/person if 5 or more from the same facility register)
  • Lunch Session, Training for Trainers, 11:45 to 12:45, $10 additional for box lunch
  • Afternoon Session, Advanced Consideration of Cases and Conversations, 1:00 to 4:00, $45 ($35/person if 5 or more from the same facility register)
  • All day, including lunch, $65

Day and Time: April 12, 2011, 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Matters of Life and Death: Demystifying Medical Decision Making in Colorado

It's bound to happen someday -- you will be faced with making difficult medical decisions for a loved one, or a loved one -- or stranger -- for you. Whether for a short illness or a long decline at the end of life, a gazillion decisions must be made, balancing personal values, medical facts and unknowns, quality of life, hopes and dreams. Are you ready?

This lively and interactive workshop will give you the truth and the tools for managing medical decisions in Colorado, including updates on recent changes in state law and regulations governing Living Wills, CPR directives (DNRs), health care proxies, and the new Medical Orders for Scope of Treatment.

You'll get advice and practice on how to think about and document your decisions, and how to start the conversation with family members, friends, and healthcare providers. Great for individuals or couples; essential for anyone working with seniors in any setting!

Last Chance! March 26, 1:00PM to 4:00PM, Colorado Free University, Lowry Campus, $46 or $35 CFU members
